Well 974, I'm not using the original core design, I'll be using a more stable design.

I'll need to make a few more parts to make jigs but for the most part I'm moving on to putting it all together.

Mass production

Well I think I've finally gotten it all down, good clean molds, good parts and mass production. I can make about 150 at a time. I'd like to be able to make about 250 at a time to cover bad parts, still get one or two each run.

I thought I was having issues with the plastic. I've been using the Oomoo Onyx but the parts have been turning out really bad. Lots of bubbles and sticky parts, a real mess.

Turns out it's not the plastic, it's the temperature and the humidity. It's much easier in the summer time in NC to get good parts then in the winter time.

I've been outside mostly so early morning dew and dusk also make a difference.

I think I've finally gotten the molding down but I'm switching to the Oomoo 30. It takes a lot longer to set, 6 hours for the 30, 75 min for the 25, but it has far fewer air bubbles and a stiffer final mold.

02/02/10 - I have a set of 19 pieces / Masters for $99.00 if anyone is interested.

Their not perfect but they don't need nearly as much work as the prefab printer version.

I use 19 because I use a 2" ball as the core.

1/10/10 - Can't wait for the warm weather, I've been casting part in my makeshift workshop in the second bath. I've been casting some of the bigger parts.

1/03/10 - Ordered more Oomoo, I really need to get the large Gal. size the supplies are getting expensive, I've spent $300.00 - $400.00 already.

12/25/09 - Still no Petaminx for Christmas, maybe next year! Merry Christmas anyway!

12/05/09 - It think it's getting a little to cold (and damp) out to be casting parts in the shed and the space heater just isn't cutting it! The Smooth On Onyx is nice but a little to toxic for small spaces in doors unless you have REALLY good ventilation.

I'll work on my molds some more this winter, right now I'm casting one part at a time. I need mass production.

11/05/09 - Ok I was just watching a video on youtube of Drewseph's Teraminx and I think I should be able to make a Petaminx 2.0 without to much trouble.

11/04/09 - I just found out the V2 petaminx is a better, more stable version. I wonder if I can mod the parts I have.

Around the world in 80 days!

I've seen estimates of around 80 hours to make one Petaminx. Now I've done some model building and those types of thing. I wouldn't call my self a pro but I wouldn't say I'm a beginner either.

What I'm getting at is I don't see how I get this done in 160 hours, let a lone 80, it's just to time consuming. I think I've got 20 hours in and I'm just now finishing the molds.

Time well tell.

10/29/09 - Tried to cast my first part today from the molds I made, whole new set of headaches to over come.

10/26/09 - I have molds for all the parts but I think I need bigger molds so I can cast more parts at one time. I think if I cast one part at a time it would take forever to cast them all.

10/23/09 - I have all the big parts cast, now I need to cast the small parts.

10/21/09 - It's not the mold release, I just wasn't using it correctly. It's amazing how well things work when you read the directions.

10/19/09 - Cast a sold block, need a different mold release.

10/17/09 - OOMOO arrived today.

10/15/09 - Need more supplies, clay, cups, etc.

10/13/09 - Touching up masters to make them smooth.

10/12/09 - Masters are here.

10/7/09 - Ordered 3D masters.

Today, late 2009, I have many puzzles, many Rubix's like, many not. Last year I got a V-Cube 7x7x7 and I thought I had the biggest and best puzzle out their. Then earlier this year my nephew showed me the Petaminx. I never imagined at the time that I would one day attempt to build one.
